Stories we carry
A story worth telling doesn’t have to be extraordinary.
It might be something that happened once and never quite left.
A person. A place. A journey. A mistake. A love. A family story. Something funny, tender, strange, painful or impossible to forget.
For one evening, a few people share one of the stories they carry with them.
Not performances. Not speeches. Personal stories, told from one person to another.
Many languages, one room
Tell it in the language it belongs to.
Each edition begins with one shared theme.
Childhood, love, travel, adventure… The same subject is explored through different memories, languages and cultures.
Some memories arrive in French. Others in English, Mandarin, Portuguese, Arabic or a language only part of the room understands.
We don’t ask storytellers to leave that language behind.
Instead, each story is given enough English context or support for everyone to follow what is happening, while allowing the original language to remain part of the experience.
You may not understand every word.
You can still understand the story.
Not an open mic
A few stories. Given time.
Ma plus belle histoire… is not an open mic.
The stories are chosen and prepared before the evening, allowing each person the time and space to tell theirs without rushing towards the next name on a list.
There may be laughter. There may be silence. There may be stories that stay with you on the way home.
That is rather the point.
Around the stories
The room matters too.
Like everything in Our Living Room, the evening is also about what happens around the programme.
A drink before the first story.
A conversation during the break.
Meeting the person whose story you have just heard.
The stories bring people into the room.
What happens between them is part of the evening too.
