A French card game, a few rules to learn, something to drink and just enough competition to make people care about the score.
You can arrive knowing exactly how to play.
You can arrive having completely forgotten.
You can arrive without knowing what a belote is.
Pull up a chair.
A little piece of village life, transported to Perth.
Belote is one of those games that rarely exists on its own.
There is usually a table, a café, people talking over one another, someone insisting they remember the rules better than everyone else, and a game that somehow becomes an entire evening.
Belote, Papote & Rebelote brings a little of that atmosphere into Our Living Room.
Come to play, learn, speak French, meet people or simply see why four people staring seriously at thirty-two cards can make so much noise.
Do I need to know how to play?
Absolutely not.
Some people arrive knowing the game well. Others played years ago. Some have never played belote before.
We’ll explain what you need to know and help people find a table.
The evening is open to French speakers, French learners and anyone curious enough to join in.
French is not required. A willingness to play helps.
The papote matters too
The game is only half of it.
The cards give us a reason to sit down together.
Around them come introductions, arguments about rules, bits of French, bits of English, stories, food, drinks and conversations that continue after the hand is over.
And because this is Our Living Room, the winners may leave with something slightly less predictable than a trophy: a poem written for them.
Some evenings may bring a few other surprises too.
We’re not promising what. That would rather spoil the point.
You may come because you love belote.
You may stay for everything around it.
How the evening works
ARRIVE
Find a table, meet the other players and grab something to drink.
PLAY
We’ll help beginners get started and let experienced players get on with the serious business of winning.
PAPOTE
There is time between games, around the table and afterwards to talk, meet people and enjoy the room.
Winners get the glory.
And possibly a poem.
Rebelote? That simply means we do it again.
