What is Art in French?
Art in French is a smaller holiday program built around one artistic world at a time.
Over three days, children discover an artist or movement, learn new words in French, experiment with materials and techniques, and create their own work in response.
It is not a formal art class, and it is not only about making. It is about looking closely, imagining freely, speaking, listening and creating in French.
Small group · Ages 6–12 · 3 days
First edition: Surrealism
For this first edition, children will step into the strange, playful and imaginative world of surrealism.
They will discover artworks filled with unexpected shapes, dreamlike images and surprising associations, then respond through drawing, collage, painting and their own creative experiments.
The aim is not to copy a masterpiece, but to enter a world, explore it in French, and make something personal from it.
How the three days unfold
Three days to look, experiment and see where it leads.
Each day begins with artworks, images and conversation.
Children look closely, notice details, discover artists and new words in French, then move into making: drawing, painting, collage, unusual combinations and experiments of their own.
The children are deliberately not guided by a painter or asked to learn a particular technique. Art in French is not a painting class, and the aim is not to reproduce an artist’s work or imitate their style.
An artwork might spark an idea, a colour, a shape, a question or something completely unexpected.
We are interested in what happens next.
Where will a child take what they have seen? What will stay with them? What will change along the way?
The exploration belongs to them.
FROM THE WORK TO EXHIBITION
And the work doesn’t necessarily end on the table.
Art in French is also connected to Through Children’s Eyes, The Living Room’s bilingual children’s exhibition.
After discovering an artistic movement and creating their own responses, children have the opportunity to see their work leave the workshop and enter an exhibition space.
Their art is shown alongside the artists and ideas that inspired the program, creating a conversation between what children have discovered and what they have made themselves.
